Big Bull Elk is a video documentary about how elk shed their antlers in the late winter and immediately begin growing new and larger ones. These antlers are encased with a velvet-like covering with blood vessels that nutrients flow through. These antlers are some of the fastest growing bone in the animal kingdom. Through the growing process, the bulls are careful not to damage the velvet or the antlers may become misshapen and deformed. By the end of July and beginning of August, they are fully grown and the velvet is rubbed off, revealing the hard bone of the antlers. This process usually takes 24 hours or less.
